Three people on the ridge of a large sand dune in Death Valley, CA.
Sand dunes are strange how they sometimes appear in the middle of nowhere IF the situation is just right. If the wind is blowing in such a way that the sand can collect in a given spot without continuing on its way, you get a dune. Death Valley is a large place with LOTS of sand and LOTS of wind, but during our visit we saw proper sand dunes in only one location. Even though the Death Valley sand dunes are small (one mile by three miles) relative to the size of the park, they contain some of the tallest sand dunes in North America. The image above should give you some idea how big the largest ones are. For more info on the Death Valley sand dunes, click here.
