Cozy

While looking for light in the stormy sky yesterday, we happened to stop by the harbor adjacent to the Golden Gate Bridge at Fort Baker to see what we might see. I noticed this old MG wrapped up in a colorful tarp. I used the Nikon 14-24mm wide angle both for some perspective and to allow me to get close to the subject.

There was an old RV and some other cars parked right behind this one, and the only way I could isolate my subject here was to get VERY close. The 14-24mm lens lets you do just that. The camera was about 2 feet away from this car. One of the challenges of using this lens, in fact, is making sure you don’t get TOO close and bumping into your subject! Just another reason why it’s good to keep both eyes open when shooting.

Again, my eyes could see better than the camera, and in order to properly expose the car, I lost all detail in the clouds. Exposing them well made the car almost black. So I made two exposures and combined them in Photoshop. I also felt the clouds were not blue enough, so I gave in to some Photoshoppery and intensified their natural color.

Info: This photograph was made with a Nikon D700 Digital SLR Camera, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens, on a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod with a Manfrotto 488RC2 Midi Ball Head(3157N) and a NIKON MC30 Remote Cable Release. I combined two exposures (made at 1/60 and 1/400, both at f/9, ISO 800, 14mm) in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
