Turn 2, Catalunya, 2011
The 2011 MotoGP field moves through Catalunya’s chicane on lap 1 with reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo in the lead. Casey Stoner, on his way to his second world title, will go on to win.
One of the best things about this photograph is that Lorenzo has a lightly-tinted visor and his face is visible. The concentration shown in his eyes is fierce. Also of note: Marco Simoncelli and Loris Capirossi are both included in the field.
The story behind this image is told in this blog post: MotoGP Story: The Catalan Follies which describes the hectic moments that led up to Scott being in position to make this photograph.

As Hiroshi Aoyama’s mechanics warmed up his Honda RCV212V for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the bike would occasionally spit a mixture of blue fire and gray smoke from the upper exhaust pipe. The flame appeared for only a split second and it took many tries to catch the flame’s appearance as others in the pit lane looked on. This image is a kind of precursor to the Blue Fire image, and it also graced the cover of the 2010 MotoMatters.com Motorcycle Racing Calendar.
