“Super Sic 1”
Several weeks before Marco Simoncelli’s fatal accident in Sepang in October, 2011, the very talented Rich Lee and I began collaborating on this amazing illustration. Rich drew from several of my photographs from the 2011 season, combining various elements into this original piece. Marco’s death put the project on hold for some time, and after discussing how best to proceed, we decided that the work should become a tribute to Marco’s larger-than-life on-track presence so that fans of his might have a unique remembrance of this unique rider.
When first we offered the illustration for sale as prints, we donated a portion of the proceeds to Riders for Health in Simoncelli’s name. Sic was a generous participant in Riders events and we felt certain he would approve of this contribution.
The illustration is available again as a tribute to Super Sic via the Marco Simoncelli Archive at PHOTO.GP, and since the creation of the , we now have a direct link to a charity that honors Sic’s spirit and character. “Super Sic 1” takes its place among the other images honoring Marco, and for which 50% of all proceeds from print sales go directly to the Foundation.
